My mom is the best mom in the world! She was just a young army wife when she had me and gave of herself completely even before I was born. My mom majored in Economics at St. John’s University and was one of the few women in her class, yet excelled in this subject. She gave up a career in economics for her family. She was a stay at home mom and everything was always perfect.
Our home was never just a house. The carpet always had straight lines from the vacuum and the sheets and clothes were always ironed. She poured her soul into decorating our home, but always seeking out a good deal in the process. Anyone can decorate a home, but to do it on a budget is a challenge. There were always homemade dinners; no one was ever hungry in our home! As well as, tons of homemade desserts! My mom became known as “June Cleaver” in our neighborhood.
She always volunteered at my school, giving of herself in anyway she could. Helping the teachers with Xerox (before copy machines), teaching a gifted class, helping in the library, planning the class parties. She one time planned and executed a thanksgiving dinner for the entire school, with very little help from anyone. She did all of this, not for the recognition or the appreciation from the teachers, but for me. It was an incredibly thankless job and yet, she did it each and every year.
She has continued to evolve as I have grown. When I started dating she would stay up and listen to me talk about the boy I was dating, often times until 3 or 4 in the morning.
Recently, she has become my cheerleader, as I have had to reinvent myself from life’s hardships. She has been there encouraging me and helping me remember my own strengths at times when I have felt very weak. She also never lets me get too full of myself when I’m feeling confident.
There is so much more I could say, but there just isn't enough space to write it all. Someday I hope to have a daughter, so I can pass on all of these wonderful gifts my mom has given to me.
